I used to try and guess what keywords to program into a web page. Imagine that. I think of some term like "free ebooks" throw it into the meta description tag and think that traffic will flood my site. I was so wrong about that. I now wander how I got the idea that this strategy would actually work.

I have been reading a couple of books lately and have discovered several jealously guarded secrets that have been helping me get a higher search engine ranking. One of the secrets is to know exactly what words and phrases people search for on the Internet.

Search Engine Results

I have had poorly ranked pages start ranking higher just because I used a search term in a text link. One link will not be enough though. And a heavily searched term has too much competition. I pick terms that are not too heavily searched. Then I make links from all my webpages. If I write an article or two or three which contains that search term and other similar terms, the targeted pages seem to do better again. A lot better.

Here is some examples of text links that can be used for HitScreamer: Guaranteed Traffic, Free Hits, Free Traffic, Increase Traffic. The more pages that these links are on, the higher ranking it will be for that term. If the link is on several pages which contain the same search term on that page, rankings will improve much more quickly.

Keywords in Ads

If you write ads online, use a search term in the link and place the search term once in the text along with one or two other related search terms. Make sure the ad still reads ok. It's no good to stuff keywords into an ad so that the reader does not understand what the ad is about.

It's easy to get into the top 10 with some of the less frequently searched terms and phrases. In some cases where there is not a lot of competition, you can get a higher search engine ranking for the top searched term. Experiment with different search terms too.
